Monday, August 28th

Gina was propped up on a dining room chair for hair plaiting at five o’clock the next morning. From the wailing and whining that ensued, one would have assumed she was undergoing torture in an effort to elicit state secrets.

Not that she was being prepped for her transformation into Sister Regina Marie.

We had an early plane to catch from our small local airport. We would be transferring at Portland for our flight to Albany, New York. There would be no time between leaving the apartment and arriving at the convent for us to transform ourselves into nuns, hence the early morning hair and costume appointment.

All that was left to do to Gina was set the coif and veil in place. But braiding all her hair had taken longer than I’d planned. Of course, braiding my own an hour earlier hadn’t been a quick and easy process either. But it all needed to be hidden under those veils, so we had little choice.

When Gina was completely nunnified, and I was about to walk her to the mirror in the bathroom, my doorbell rang. It could only be one person, so I buzzed him up.

With everything happening so quickly I’d had no time to tell Darius about Gina’s and my plans. I’d texted him earlier and asked him to stop by.

I stood by the door, ready to open it the second he knocked.

Three quick raps on the door.

I swung it open, revealing Sister Margaret Rose in all her glory.

Darius’ mouth dropped open. One corner of his mouth began to twitch upward.

Gina took a few steps toward the door, catching his eye.

“Oh my god.” He shook his head, cupped his chin in one hand and surveyed the two nuns standing before him.

“Is this some special treat you have planned for me, love? Fulfill a fantasy?”

“Dear God, no,” Gina barked at him.

“Sorry, not this time,” I said with a giggle.

“So…who wants to explain this to me?”

I caught him up as quickly as I could since we needed to leave soon. When I’d finished, he stepped close to me. Then moved a little closer.

“Sister Margaret Rose, I’m going to kiss you now.”

And he did. I doubted very many nuns had had men kiss them like that.

Or ever.

“When you get home, don’t pack this outfit away, right away.” He waggled his brows suggestively.

“We’ll see,” I said with a sly grin.

“You two! God! Stop now. Please,” Gina groused.

“We do need to get going. Thank you for the early morning visit.”

“Your text said you needed to see me, so I hurried. But I thought I was hurrying for a very different reason.”

“Sorry,” I said with a shrug and a pout. “But I wanted to let you know I’d be gone for a couple of days.”

He gave me a kiss—or perhaps he gave Sister Margaret Rose a kiss—and Gina and I grabbed our minimal luggage, and all three of us left the apartment together.

When Gina and I got in the car and Darius started to walk in the direction of his home, I saw him laughing and shaking his head.
